Stack Financial Management uses a team approach to investment management. Portfolio Management Team members include James Stack, Brian Lazorishak, Annell Danczyk, Catherine Hetrick, and Joe Laszewski. All Portfolio Managers are Registered Investment Advisor Representatives who have either passed the NASD Series 65 exam or hold a Charter Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Collectively, this group has well over 85 years of investment management experience. Additionally, Brian and Annell hold the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, while Catherine has a masters degree in business administration, and Joe is a Certified Public Accountant.
James Stack, president of Stack Financial Management and founder of InvesTech Research, isn't your typical investment advisor. His office is in Montana, over 2,200 miles away from Wall Street, nestled in a glen of birch, tamarack, cedar and Douglas fir on the shore of Whitefish Lake. But this locale hasn't prevented Jim from helping investors develop an objective, safety-first investment strategy focused on risk management.
Formerly a project manager for IBM Research with a number of domestic and international patents to his credit, Jim has a graduate degree in engineering, with post-graduate study in business. After founding InvesTech Research in 1979, he began publishing the InvesTech Research newsletter in 1982. In 1994, he opened Stack Financial Management. Jim and his staff maintain over a century of financial and market data, and create all of the custom analysis software used by InvesTech and Stack Financial Management.
In addition to addressing numerous investment seminars throughout the world, Jim is frequently quoted in financial publications such as Barron's, Money Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and USA Today. He has appeared on PBS' Nightly Business Report, CNBC, CNN and was a featured guest on Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser.
In June 2000, Jim was awarded a Carnegie Medal in "recognition of an outstanding act of heroism" for a midnight rescue following a boating accident near his home on Whitefish Lake. Working and living near majestic Glacier National Park (a feature Barron's article described it as "Far From the Madding Crowd"), Jim and his wife Lisa spend their rare spare time skiing and white-water kayaking.
Brian Lazorishak is a Senior Portfolio Manager on the SFM Portfolio Management Team. He joined the company in 2015 and focuses on portfolio composition and sector analysis as well as securities research and selection. Brian has a BS degree in business and psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Upon completing his degree, he spent several years in the insurance industry, followed by over 18 years of experience in equity analysis and portfolio management for an independent investment advisor managing portfolios for institutional and individual clients.
Brian has extensive experience in both fundamental and technical analysis, and earned his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2000 and the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation in 2005. He also completed the coursework to earn the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) in 2010. In addition to appearances on CNBC and the Nightly Business Report, he has been quoted in Barron's, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, and other publications. His extensive knowledge of the stock market, coupled with his commitment to SFM's philosophy, make him the perfect addition to our team.
Annell Danczyk is a Senior Portfolio Manager at SFM. She is responsible for securities analysis, trading, and maintaining the technical support criteria for managed portfolios. Upon joining SFM in 2003, Annell worked in account maintenance and client services, enhancing her ability to support and understand the entire client experience. In 2008, she transitioned full-time to the Portfolio Management Team. Annell completed coursework to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2014.
Annell has a BS degree in chemical engineering from Kansas State University. Upon graduating she worked for Arco Oil and Gas in West Texas and Alaska. For 15 years prior to joining SFM, Annell worked in a variety of technical positions for the U.S. Army, Navy, and the Department of Energy as she followed her husband, a career Army officer, around the United States and across the ocean to Italy and Germany.
Joe Laszewski joined SFM in 2016 and serves as a Portfolio Manager on the SFM Portfolio Management Team. His conservative, risk-averse approach to portfolio management, coupled with his accounting background, adds breadth of talent to our SFM team.
Joe earned his Bachelor of Accountancy degree from the University of North Dakota, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He began his professional career in public accounting and most recently served as a portfolio manager in the asset management division of a large regional bank, serving both institutional and high net worth clients. He is currently a Level III Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) candidate, while also completing coursework for a Masters of Investment Management and Financial Analysis.
Cathy Hetrick is Vice President at SFM and also serves as a Senior Portfolio Manager, concentrating on sector analysis, portfolio composition, and securities research and selection. In addition, she is the firm's Compliance Officer.
